BOTSWANA: EXPLORERS, WRITERS & FILM-MAKERS

Alexander McCall Smith is the latest of the writers who have stirred the imagination and inspired journeys to Africa. The late Anthony Minghella’s film of The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency reflects the author’s loving portrayal of Botswana, where traditional values coexist with development, education and modern technology.

The intrepid explorers of the 19th century are still remembered. Baines Baobabs, beside which Mma Ramotswe parks after she has rescued the teacher’s son, and Baines Camp commemorate the explorer and artist, Thomas Baines. Stanley Safari Lodge in Victoria Falls honours the memory of the remarkable man who traced Dr. David Livingstone, who was the first European to set eyes on the Falls.

To mark the broadcast of The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency, we have secured a special price on this varied Botswana safari. Travel between 1 April and 30 June and save £118 per person sharing.

Our 9-day journey in Botswana and Victoria Falls costs from £2508 per person sharing. BOTSWANA NATURAL HISTORY EXPEDITION

Depart on 19 June 2008 and save up to £1460 per person on this superb 14-day mobile safari through northern Botswana.

This is an amazing opportunity to journey through Botswana with Brent and Grant Reed, who will bring to life and help you understand the intricate inter‐relationships binding the birds, animals, insects, and plants of the African bush. The Reed brothers are owners of the safari company, third generation naturalists, highly qualified guides, wildlife photographers and directors of the Okavango Guiding School, and have specialised in Botswana for over a decade.

This is a very comfortable safari. The tents are spacious with en suite facilities, good beds and bed-side tables. Bucket showers can be ordered as required, and hot water is provided every morning and evening. A professional safari chef prepares the meals of a high standard, and good quality wines are served.

Depart on an overnight flight to Johannesburg, where you connect with the morning flight to Maun. Board a charter flight over the southern Okavango to Xakanaxa, where camp awaits you. The sight of elephant in the mopane scrub and herds of lechwe and buffalo on the plains will revive you. Two further days are spent exploring the Moremi Game Reserve in the eastern Okavango, an area of diverse habitat and rich and varied game and birdlife. Game viewing is both by boat and on game drives. Continue to the scenic Khwai area, with its mopane, lead-wood and camelthorn woodlands to spend three days. Leopard, cheetah, serval and lion are common predators and the home ranges of 2 different packs of wild dog include the Khwai. Walking safaris and night drives provide additional game viewing in the Khwai.
The journey to Savute crosses the Mababe Depression, the remains of the ancient Lake Makgadikgadi and a birder's paradise. Savute is distinguished by the extraordinary interaction between elephants and unusually large prides of lion, which enables the lion to prey even on young adult elephants. You will also walk to see some of the San paintings that are a feature of the area.
It is a fabulous journey through the teak woodlands to the vast floodplains of the Chobe River. Spend 2 nights in Chobe National Park, with its massive buffalo herds, enormous elephant population, roan and sable antelope and the Puku's only location in southern Africa. No longer under canvas, Elephant Valley Lodge is the base for game drives, boat cruises and walking safaris.
Travel to the Zambian border and on to Livingstone for a finale of 2 nights at Victoria Falls, staying at Taita Falcon Lodge.

Departing 19 June from London Heathrow, this exceptional 13-night/14-day safari costs from £3,350 per person sharing. The price includes flights, airport taxes, all specified activities, park entry fees, meals, accommodation, drinks on safari and all transfers.
